The City of Whitehorse is tucked within the towering mountains of Northwest Canada. Like most of the Yukon, it experiences a subarctic climate with average winter lows plummeting to -7.8°F. While this chilling climate may be are ideal for Whitehorse’s hosting the 2012 Arctic Games, it can sometimes cause community interaction to be disrupted. The City worked with Vision Internet to create an easy-to-use online information hub that would enhance communication with their sometimes-secluded audience.
On the new website, the City keeps citizens updated on the latest news and upcoming events by dynamically posting information directly to the homepage. Meanwhile, recent minutes from Council meetings, program registration, and up-to-date city service schedules are only a click away from the homepage. In case of an emergency, such as severe weather, the City can immediately post an “Important Notice” banner that is visible throughout the entire website. Whitehorse is home to the Canada Games Centre (CGC) – a multi-use community wellness facility that has become a second home to many people in Whitehorse and surrounding communities. When the weather is rough, the CGC is packed. For this reason, the CGC Schedule Directory was an important addition to the new website. It allows users to search CGC activities by category, view schedules by day or month, and easily “share & bookmark” pages for later use. This simple tool has greatly affected this community by enabling a more organized and interactive home away from home.
